Welcome (Back) to Sports 4 Jarvis

We encourage a life of physical activity and sports for the kids who go to Jarvis. S4J believes it's a good thing to do. Can't do it without people who help us. Money helps. If you have a bit, consider a year end donation to Sports 4 Jarvis.

We have a special Offer for you this year

THE NEWS

THE 2023 JCI GOLF, REUNION AND RALLY...WAS REALLY, REALLY GOOD!

For the second straight year the event was held at  "Our Home of Golf", the very great and world famous Don Valley Golf Club. Many of us grew up there on the manicured lawns beside the always interesting Don River. (The kinds of things we used to see floating down the river were, rather fascinating to say the least. But that's another story. So too are memories of flying clubs, naps under the great Willows beside # 12 in the (very) early morning and the old elevator up the to the 19th). We want to offer our sincerest thanks to the management at Don Valley for accomodating us. Their professional and friendly treatment of all participants will not be forgotten.  So too, a shout-out to the folks at the Grenadier Group who looked after us and our dinner in fine fashion. Pryanka and Alexis especially.

All golfers and many non golfers continued their commitment and $ donations to the Sports 4 Jarvis program. This year, promotion of the tourney and rally saw over $ 2,000 raised, and that without a soliciting campaign!! Thanks to all who support us.

Again this year, 20 golfers vied for the title of Champion Golfers of The JCI World Title. The winning group was Pearce , Hetherington, Morgan and Caldwell...all grizzled and proud veterans of this wonderful  event. The venerable JCI Invitaional Trophy (aka The Ken Ohtake Trophy) which dates to 1963, was front and centre...this time sporting a THIRD 2x4 added to its base and, a drinkable centre cup to bring celebrations of its winning clearly in line with other major cups...the Stanley and Grey come to mind. And the Mulock Cup too, come to think about it!

ED Note: The new base is sufficient to host plaques until 2036. But...another 2x4 can be added easily after that. The torphy is designed to be flexible as are its supporters. We will play and compete and love it until we can't.

THE COACH; Rompin' Ron W.

Come from (Far) Away: Bob Read

(with Richard Orviss)

Closest To; Don McCrimmon

Long Drive: Mike Yoshida (again with EmCee Orviss)

Q and A Update on the Sports 4 Jarvis Programs.....

Q1. Do we have any money left in the account for future school needs? WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO NEXT?

Yes. We expect a plethora of needs and opportunities in 2023/2024 as athletics continue to get back to normal and as the opportunities of the new field are exploited. Additional basketball hoops affixed to the school and some painted -on- wall tennis nets are being discussed. S4J managemnt still is exploring the provision of some golf netting to facilitate some level of golf instruction and practice.

Q2.  What has S4J done in the recent past to help the school and students?

We donated another $6,000 in 2022. The money went to supply a combination of equipment, including uniforms and netting for the new outdoor soccer goals.Partly as a result of the suspension of sports activities during the pandemic, there was a period of a year, year and a half when no athletics related donations were requested/needed. However, a $2,000 financial contribution in 2020 provided food certificates to needy Jarvis student families during the early stages of the Pandemic.  That followed on previous years donations of $4,500 and of cousre, the financing of golf clinics off site and at the school.

Q3. Will S4J be asking for donations again this year?

Yes. Experience has shown us there’s a lot of goodwill among those who don’t golf as well as those who do. Anyone - golfer or not, alumni or not - can donate through the website using a credit card by clicking here and then on the golf ball basket. (look for the  baskets and donation buttons on other pages as you are perusing the site).

NB/Ed NOTE! The software we use is PayPal’s but you can donate with your credit card; you do not need to set up a Pay Pal account. Using this system is preferable to cash or cheques because detailed records are generated each time a donation is made. So please consider using this facility when donating.

Reminders of Some Previous Contributions

$$$ and EQUIPMENT: Our donations of cash via TDSB have helped acquire needed equipment and uniforms and catalyzed a continuing equipment update/procurement program. All equipment needs are ID'd by the school before the donation is made. We meet their needs.

SHOES and PARTNERS

We provided some more than 50 pairs of running shoes in 2019 with the help of the almost-local Value Village store.

We need to reach out more formally to them and to other potential corporate partners.

AND DON'T FORGET THE FIELD!!

The new fields HAVE NOW DELIVERED A COUPLE OF SEASONS  of play. It took a while but with the prodding of Sports4Jarvis (and MANY others) it indeed got done. The kids are the winners.  TDSB!  TDSB will mange (and rent out) the field facility. This decision was preferred to having a private sector/other partner do the field development and management, a la Central Tech and Monarch or, a partnership with Ryerson.
